Michael R. Hunter Keys to Business Success

Today’s blog post is about my three keys to business success. If you aren’t familiar with who I am, my name is Michael R. Hunter and I am a leading authority on strategic marketing for small businesses. For more information on me visit my About Page.

Over the past several years I have had the opportunity to meet and work with many successful people. I have also been a part of teams that failed too. Having experienced both failures and successes I have determined that success in business can be accomplished with three simple concepts — Having a Mission, creating a Map, and setting yourself in Motion.

These three simple concepts are what I call my Three Keys to Business Success.

1. Mission

The first key is to have a mission or a purpose. If your only motivation is money, fame, or something else that’s self-serving, it will be hard to push through the challenges, problems and failure that are waiting for you on the road to success. When you have a vision and a purpose that’s bigger than you, it makes it easier to push through the pain and overcome obstacles.

Not only does it make navigating the path to success easier, but having a mission also provides an opportunity for other’s to help you execute and accomplish the mission. Other people also want to be a part of something bigger than themselves and will work hard for a bigger purpose, benefit, or cause. If your sole purpose is to make you money, no one will work their hardest just to make you a lot of money.

What are you passionate about? What is a bigger purpose that you can get behind? How can you incorporate a bigger vision into what you are already doing?

2. Map

The second key of my keys to business success is your Map. Now that you have clarity on your bigger purpose (your destination), you must determine how you are going to get there. Your map is your strategic plan for your business. Without a strategic plan or a map you won’t know which direction to go, you will get off track, you will get lost, you will get frustrated, and you will feel like you are spinning your wheels.

Creating a strategic plan, a map, is an essential component of business success that many small business owners and entrepreneurs overlook because they think they already know which way is the right way (Kind of like how men will never ask where anything is in the grocery store… we know where everything is… haha!). You would never start a coast-to-coast road trip without first mapping out your route, so why would you do that with the way you run your business?

A strategic plan will help you determine how you are going to accomplish your goals and provide the foundation to be more intentional within your business.

3. Motion

The most important key of my keys to business success is Motion. You have to take action to produce results. Most importantly you must take strategic action; action that’s in alignment with your bigger purpose and desired results.

Often times they end up feeling like they are spinning their wheels even though they are working very hard. This happens when you are taking actions that aren’t completely aligned with where you really want to go.

My definition of Motion is intentional action. Taking intentional actions, creating motion, in your business is the first step to creating momentum. Just like in sports, momentum in business is important. To maintaim momentum in your business, simply put one foot in front of the other every day. No matter how small of a step you take, take a step every day.

Taking it one step further

One big component to being more intentional in your business is to create a strategic action plan for your month, week, and day; especially if you are an entrepreneur or small business owner. If you don’t have an action plan, you waste time getting ready to get ready to get going on a daily or weekly basis. This is extremely detrimental to creating momentum in your business.
